Gregory Poling talk: "U.S. and UK Interests in the South China Sea."
The UK made waves in 2018 when it stepped up operations in the disputed South China Sea. U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson hailed this increased British operational commitment to assert freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and vowed that the two allies would continue to cooperate to push back against Chinese assertiveness and illegal claims in the disputed waterway. Although there are some divergences, Washington and London mostly share the same interests in the disputes - both are committed to defence of a global maritime commons and post-war international order, fundamental principles of which are threatened in the SCS. The U.S. network of alliances are also under threat from Chinese assertiveness. As Beijing continues to militarize the SCS and bully its neighbours, the disputes show no signs of deescalating any time soon.
